As a painter, I prefer working in abstraction, but I still use figuration to interpret my environment and provide social or cultural commentary.
This is a sampling of my figurative paintings. The mixed-media pieces are from my 2012 solo show, Genius Loci, at Seattle’s Row House Café. (Review here.) To investigate ideas of permanency, transience, and placemaking, I experimented with painting on various surfaces of materials found on the café’s site, which had been workforce housing in the early twentieth century. In this way, I attempted to address the physicality and emotional energy of the original space.
